Instant Messaging

Does instant messaging expand the boundaries of interpersonal communication or does it merely reconfigure existing boundaries that have always shaped the human experience?

IM usage allows for the expansion and maintenance of social activity suggests that usage is in itself something of a social activity. Second, their reference to the abundance of expressive tools (emoticons, sounds with characteristic meanings, pictures, font manipulation, and personalized “skins”) indicates that IM usage adds one or more dimensions to the written medium – and that by doing so it transcends the written medium.

How has this desire for constant communication change us as a society?

This question is harder to answer, it definitely has changed us but has it been negative or positive? I think there are pluses and minuses to this question. Technology has changed our society so much by allowing us to transcend the WWW and communicate with people from all over the world, but it has also created an extremely hectic lifestyle. This question I would like to dig into further as my research continues.
